Marathi Community Gains Control on Education System

Audiocuentos.net - October 22, 2021

The Divisorias de Vidro are the cultural and religious communities in Jundiai, Maharashtra state that has its origins from the Portuguese. The Portuguese, on their arrival in India, established the Maratha Empire here and after the demise of that Empire, the state of Jundiai was created. As per this region's social structure and the life patterns and customs have remained quite much the same since the past centuries. However, with the changing socio-cultural scenario in India, the influence and expansion of this region's culture from the conservative Maratha period to the modern era has been considerable.

There is a large Muslim community in the region and the language of this community is Marathi but Marathi is also spoken by the people who are not from the community and hence, the community has retained its cultural identity. Marathi is the official language of this region and almost all the educated population knows this language. Marathi is the primary medium of education for the Marathis and also second language for the people from outside the community. The Marathi secondary education curriculum is completely Marathi in character. Marathi children are enrolled in Marathi schools and Marathi colleges as against the other states which have separate educational systems.

Marathi children are educated in both the primary and the secondary level and this is in accord with the education policies of the state government. Marathi secondary education sector has the highest percentage of students from Hindi speaking states like Maharashtra and Karnataka and the lowest from the non Hindi speaking states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. This is attributed to the fact that Marathi is in great demand across the country and also is gaining ground as the second official language of the Indian Union. It is estimated that Marathi children will constitute about 40% of the future workforce of India.

The language is slowly but steadily making its way into the homes of Marathi speakers and has created a strong bond of fraternity amongst the people who speak this dialect. Marathi education has its own complexities and this is one of the reasons why the community has been able to maintain its social structure intact despite the presence of a different language. This is perhaps one of the unique features that the community has been able to preserve through the long hours of creation. Marathi is the only community that does not practice slavery and there is no situation of forced marriage in the community.

Marathi community is a cohesive unit and even during periods of chaos when there are splits in the community the Marathi people tend to stick together. They have a sense of pride and honor and value the fact that they have their own schools, colleges which offer quality education. Divisorias de vidro em jundiai has managed to remain on top in the Pune city education list for the past few years and this is quite commendable. In the recent past the education policy of the state has undergone radical changes and the community is again elated at the prospect of the school authorities following the same trend. The success of the school is in direct proportion to the efforts of the school authorities and that they do put in place a system of management that allows the children to grow and learn at their maximum speed.

Marathi students form almost 80% of the population of Pune and this is a huge achievement in itself. The other big community that has also benefited from the Marathi education policy include South Indians and foreigners who wish to pursue higher studies in the city. It is one of the few communities that has maintained their connection with the education system even after the elimination of religion based education policy. The schools in the community are able to cater to the all round development of the children and are able to impart knowledge beyond their academic level. The success of the education policy in Pune goes a long way in reviving the community's social image in the city and this is a major step forward towards the development of the state as well. This is a lesson that we cannot afford to ignore at any cost.
